The Idea &

The Execution

My Senior capstone explores the use of light in photography, with the addition of medium manipulation. This was all about experimentation and going beyond the original plan. Shown below, I will share my work processes and ideas through the 4-month stage of this project.

Original Intentions

Since becoming a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I’ve become infatuated with Fine Art photography and gallery showings. I knew I wanted to be able to display the work I was proud of, I just needed the right reason.

Visual Media Students don’t necessarily have the opportunity to display their artwork in a gallery manner. A big part of my project proposal was to create and find a space for my Visual Media Graduating class to do just that.

In collaboration with a fellow classmate and friend, Mary Moreno, we were able to source a local gallery space, file contracts, and find school-provided funding for this gallery.

With a gallery space secured and a class inspired to create work to present, I was time to find what passions in photography I wanted to show.

The exploration of light in digital and analog imagery was an idea I’d find myself experimenting with often. Originally starting digitally, then moving to black and white 4x5 negatives, I’d created the start of my project, “Luminance Revealed”.

After some time, I found myself wanting more. I needed more character, more movement, more excitement. I decided to composite these images, Manually.

Eventually, I became comfortable with the idea of “destroying the image”. Following the unpredictable direction of tears and rips to create the outline of the composition.

It was time for me to invest in an more unforgiving medium, “Color Negative 4x5 Film”.

It was at this time, I found myself struggling to decide how to wrap and finalize the pieces I had tested. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to pursue the project in color or black and white. Eventually, with the help and feedback from my fellow professors and peers, I decided to make them two separate projects.

LUMINENCE REVEALED

Mangled Memoirs

Now that I had the content, all that was left was to layout my artwork and hang it for showing.

Additionally, I want to spread my artwork beyond the gallery. I wanted to create takeaways in the forms of cards and stickers. something for the viewers to remember my work form.

Thank you to everyone who helped guide and support me throughout this project.
